Leylandii hedges: planting, spacing and trimming

Why Leylandii is the fastest evergreen hedge, how far apart to plant rootballed plants and how to trim them so the hedge stays dense.

Why Leylandii for hedges

Leylandii (× Cupressocyparis leylandii) is one of the fastest-growing evergreen conifers. It forms a dense green wall that gives privacy and shelter from wind and noise all year round, which is why landscapers and garden centres across Europe use it for screens along gardens, fields and roads.

Planting distance

For a hedge, rootballed Leylandii are usually planted 60–100 cm apart in a single row, depending on plant size and how quickly the hedge must close. Larger plants can be spaced a little wider. Dig a hole wider than the rootball, keep the top of the rootball level with the soil and water thoroughly after planting.

Trimming

Trim two or three times a year during the growing season so the hedge stays dense from the base. Always cut into green foliage: Leylandii does not regrow from old brown wood, so a hedge that has been left to grow too wide cannot be cut back hard. Keep the top slightly narrower than the base so light reaches the lower branches.
